About Bob

Known as Pastor Carrington, Bob Carrington, Robert Carrington, or Reverend Bob

Robert "Bob" Carrington

Pastor Carrington was a well-known minister in California and throughout the Assemblies of God denomination.  He was the pastor at Bethel Temple, Turlock, from 1947 through 1976, and Valley Christian Center, Ceres, from 1980 through 1997.  He ministered with the Assemblies of God organization for 70 years, and served on numerous boards and committees.  He held a number of influential positions with the Assemblies of God, and was the first full-time President of Christ’s Ambassadors, for the Northern California/Nevada District.

In addition to having ministered in Turlock and Ceres, Bob was the pastor at A. of G. churches in Nevada City, (1939-1943), St. Helena (1943-1945, Church of the Highlands, San Bruno (1976-1979), Clayton (1979-1980, and Valley Christian Center, Ceres (1980-1997.  Additionally, he filled-in for furloughed USA military missionaries in West Germany from 1977-1978.  There was nothing greater for Bob than sharing Jesus, His love, and how He could transform lives.

He served as Sectional, General, and Executive Presbyter with the Assemblies, as well as 18 years on the Board of Directors — 8 board chairman (the longest of any one person) for Bethany Bible College (later known as Bethany University) in Scotts Valley, CA.  He was instrumental in helping to establish the Assemblies of God School of Missions and served four years on the Central District’s Missions’ Board (in Springfield, MO).  He held an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Bethany Bible College.

Robert Carrington was born in Birkenhead England, and at age 7, immigrated with his sister, and recently widowed mother to Sacramento, CA. His older brothers (2), remained in England, and he would not see his family in England again for 35 years. He met Josephine Seal in Sacramento when they were playmates in the same neighborhood. Neither of them ever had another boyfriend or girlfriend.

After Jo graduated from high school, they were engaged and both went to Southern California Bible School in Pasadena CA, (now known as Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA). Bob and Jo graduated together, and were married a few months later on August 27, 1939. Together they served for 43 years until Jo passed away from cancer in 1982.

Robert married Barbara Weatherred on March 17, 1984. They served the Ceres ministry until 1996. At age 80, Bob retired from his pulpit ministry and began a new ministry as Founder and President of God’s Door Keepers. Robert and Barbara worked full time to take the “New Life” Packets into United States prisons, church organizations and beyond to individuals seeking God.

Through God’s Door Keepers, they were able to distribute the evangelistic packet for young Christians who needed answers (from the Bible) about their “New Life” in Christ. God’s Door Keepers raised financing for the printing and distribution (free of charge) of over 600,000 of these “New Life” packets to chaplains, priests and ministers within local, state and federal prisons. As of 2009, God’s Doorkeepers have received over 4,000 letters from prisoners whose lives have be touched by the packets. “New Life” packets have found their way into lives around the world. They are being used by ministers, chaplains, Christian workers and missionaries as a tool to help people grow in their new life in Christ. The packets have been reproduced in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, French and Arabic.

Because of advancing age and declining health, at age 91 Bob chose to pass on the responsibility of God’s Door Keepers. The “New Life” packet continues to share the love of Jesus Christ and the new life that is offered through Him.

Rev. Robert Carrington retired only at his “retirement” from this earth. He enjoyed his last few years with his family and friends and of course continued to minister to all who crossed his path. Pastor’s last sermon came to him in the last few days of his life and he shared it with family members.

The scripture verse was Revelation 2:17

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.

Bob had two wonderful partners and great loves in his life: Josephine Seal Carrington and Barbara Weatherred Carrington. He is survived by children Fred and Joan Carrington, Dennis and Lynde Carrington, Ann (Carrington) and Steve Tedrow, Tony and Carla Weatherred, Robert and Michelle Weatherred, Johnny (and Joan) Weatherred; 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, and extended Family.

Robert spent his life doing what he loved most, sharing Jesus.  A service to celebrate his life was held Thursday, May 14, 2009, 1:30 PM, at Harvest Christian Center, 130 3rd St., Turlock, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to God’s Door Keepers or to a Christian organization of choice, where Jesus and his love are shared.
